Vulgaire /Vulgar

法语的“vulgaire”和英语的“vulgar”都来自拉丁语的“vulgus”，意为“普通人，平民百姓，人群”(common people, crowd, throng)。“Vulgaire”(vulgar)初的意思就是“普通的，平常的，平民的”。当然，下层的劳动人民比起来，就显得有点“粗野，没教养”啦(coarse,low, ill-bred)。所以，这个词后来就演化出了“粗鄙，低俗，下流”等意思。

现代英语口语中，“vulgar”只保留了“低俗，下流，淫秽”的意思，可以和法语的“vulgaire”对译。
